Welcome to Grade 3 Room 5!
Math:
We are continuing with Fast Math on the computer with addition and subtraction as independent daily work. Most of our classroom students (19) have completed the addition operation. We still have two students to go for the entire class to be 100%. Please help encourage them to meet our goal.
Our goal this year is to have all students complete the addition operation on FASTT Math. So, please remember to practice your basic math facts every night. Please ask your child about their monthly progress regarding reaching this goal! Our next progress date is
on Friday June 1st!
Our classroom has also just started this exciting new computer-based math program call Sumdog. It is a standards based math program that helps to enrich math skills at home in a fun and exciting way. All students in our classroom have received their own usernames and private passwords. Please encourage your child to join in our school March Madness competition.
Mathematics
Our class is starting a new mathematics unit about fractions called Finding Fair Shares. In this unit, students will investigate the meaning of fractions and the ways fractions can be represented. Student will divide a single whole or a quantity into equal parts and name those parts as fractions. Students will also compare and identify equivalent fractions.
We will continue our year with learning the all multiplication tables (0-12). Please work on flash cards every night to reinforce these very important skills.
Please continue to focus on place value and the operations of addition and subtraction with larger numbers.

Social Studies & Science:
Students will focus on researching skills and learning all about our great state of Rhode Island and the city in which we live.
Every Friday afternoon, our focus has now turned to the history of Rhode Island and its many symbols.
Science: We will be starting our unit on human characteristics.
Here we will introduce the difference between learned behaviors and inherited traits.
The children are also reminded to complete 20 minutes of reading nightly. Nightly reading is a wonderful lifelong habit that has been shown by many different educational studies to be a major factor in a student's academic success.
Please check your child's planner/agenda daily.
Writing:
The children have been busy writing personal narratives(Pen-Pal letters). We are currently writing to third grader children at Stone Hill. In March and April we will focus on "persuasive" essays. So look out, you may get a very persuasive essay from your child.
We are still learning the many steps in the writing process: brainstorming, completing a draft, revising and editing our work with a peer partner and finally "publishing" their work!. They are becoming quite the young authors!
